Short Stories Reflection

This week I read There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury and The Defenders by Philip K. Dick. I honestly picked these two because I liked the titles, but I ended up only really liking one of them. I really enjoyed reading There Will Come Soft Rains because it was a really interesting read and had some unexpected events in it. I had not enjoyed The Defenders nearly as much simply because I found it too predictable. Sometimes it’s cool to be able to foresee what will happen in a story or movie, but in this case I had constantly predicted what would happen next. It ruined the story a bit for me.

There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury was relatively short, but it had a lot in it. One thing I enjoyed about it was that we could relate it to our current world. Smart houses are things that already exist and are only progressing. I don’t doubt that houses will have at least half of the capabilities the houses in the story had by 2026. It also shows how the world would just continue if humans just no longer existed. It really gets you thinking about how our world works and whether we are a positive or negative force on the world.

The Defenders, as said before, was just too predictable. As story writing goes, a story too predictable isn’t really a good story. I’m sure this story was meant to have surprising twists, but it didn’t work out that way. Overall, however, the story was good. As with the story There Will Come Soft Rains, it makes you think about the relationship between humans and the world. The leadys figured out that the humans would just keep destroying the world to satisfy their own hatred and needs. This caused them to trick the humans into staying underground while they repaired the world. Humans like to think they are important in the world and become overconfident and resentful, but that’s not really the case. I believe humans have the potential in helping the world, they just choose not to use their intelligence, money, and power to do so.
